The 25th Annual Erick’s Run, featuring a 5K run and fun walk, will kick off at 2 p.m. at the Fair Acres Family Y in Carthage, and will mark the 25th anniversary of the first race held in 1992 in memory of Erick Grove.
Grove, a 1990 graduate of Carthage High School, holds the mile record for the school, and as an all-state representative in cross country and track and field. He also played basketball for the Tigers. He passed away in the summer of 1991 in a work-related accident.
Grove’s parents, Rick and Donna, held the first race the following January, and kept it up for 10 years, when Carthage cross country and track and field coach Andy Youngworth kept it going. Proceeds from the race go to scholarships for Tiger track and field athletes and cross country runners who exemplify Grove’s spirit and desire as they compete at the college level.
Three runners received scholarships after last year’s race: Evan Adams, who is attending Allen County Community College in Iola, Kan., Billy Mendell, a student at Pittsburg State University, and Joel Williams, who is attending Freewill Baptist College in Nashville, Ten.
