BALIKI (Barge Lincoln Kids)Story
BALIKI is a steel drum band that started at a migrant elementary school (Barge Lincoln Elementary) in Yakima, WA in 2013. It began as a dream in 1996 with the director’s, Marie Webb, master’s thesis project in college.
Ms. Webb, Stacey Drake, her principal, and Becky Scholl, past president and member of the local downtown Kiwanis club went before the 2013 downtown Kiwanis Executive Board to present the idea of starting a steel drum band for a group of students at one of the most impoverished schools in the district. Kiwanis was able to give a generous donation to purchase the instruments and start up the group. The first year there were 15 students in the group. Year two, the group doubled in size, with a waiting list of about 70 students. Once again, Kiwanis was able to give a donation to purchase a few more instruments. 2015-2016 is the third school year for the program. 45 students are participating, with a waiting list of almost 200 students. BALIKI has students in third grade through sixth grade this year!
BALIKI students have shown marked improvement in attendance, school work, standardized testing, English verbal skills, and social skills over the course of their participation in the band. Your generous contribution to our organization will help these students and this program continue to thrive at Barge Lincoln Elementary for years to come!
