About This Activity

Come join us in celebration of the 11th riding of the epic Big Pencil to Big Walker METRIC Charity Ride on Saturday, June 21, 2014. Beginning near downtown Wytheville, the ride heads out through the pastoral southwest Virginia counties of Wythe and Bland, with one, two or three climbs of Big Walker Mountain.

This year we have added an exciting incentive for participants in our ride and three other rides in the new New River Cycling Series. For participants who sign up for all four rides (also available through Active, at $120 for four great rides for four great causes), your name will be entered in a drawing for a free vacation for two along the Adriatic Coast of Italy, with meals, lodging, bike rentals and guide! More information is available at http://www.newrivercyclingseries.com.

Alternatively to registering in advance for all four rides (and you don't actually have to ride), you can also participate in three of the rides through day of registration, if you need to be more spontaneous about your weekend rides!

Our ride is the third in the New River Cycling Challenge--a four ride series beginning May 31 in Galax, on June 14 there is the Grand Mercer Metric in Prinecton, W.VA., our ride on Saturday, June 21 in Wytheville, followed the next day by the Mule Hell Roubaix, a 40 mile romp through the back roads near Wytheville. The drawing for the grand prize will be after the Mule Hell ride.

Proceeds of the Big Pencil to Big Walker Charity Ride benefit Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence, Inc. (HOPE), an umbrella human services organization delivering housing, food and anti-poverty programs to the southwest Virginia counties of Wythe, Bland, Carroll, Smyth and Grayson and the city of Galax. HOPE's website is www.wythehope.org.

You can also support HOPE's mission by participating in our fundraising campaign at https://fundraising.active.com/event/11thAnnualBWCR.

If we meet our minimum online goal of $2,067 (the equivalent of the elevation gain of climbing the mountain once), all participating fundraisers will be eligible for a drawing for a $200 gas card. If we raise $3,281 (the equivalent of the elevation gain of climbing the mountain twice), all fundraisers become eligible for a drawing for a $300 gas card. If we raise $5,003 (the equivalent of the elevation gain of climbing the mountain three times), all fundraisers become eligible for a drawing for a $500 gas card.
