About This Activity

The mission of the Karene O’Hare Ovarian Cancer Memorial Run/Walk (Aka:  The Hare & Tortoise New Quarter Park 8K Run/Walk) is to raise funds to underwrite Ovarian Cancer screening programs for uninsured and underinsured women. It also underwrites educational initiatives. This mission responds to important community health needs for women of all ages. Our Run/Walk is the only comprehensive effort on the peninsula that is dedicated to this mission. The money raised remains in the local areas and there are no administrative expenses.

Since 2009, we have donated $129,000 to the Lackey Free Family Clinic and the Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center to underwrite their Ovarian Cancer screening programs. Additionally, we’ve donated $6,000 in support of educational initiatives.

Please consider these facts. Ovarian Cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women. About 1 in 58 women will receive a new diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer and in the year 2016, approximately 15,000 will die from the disease. It is very difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are subtle and easily confused with other conditions. The over-all 5-year survival rate for women diagnosed with the disease is approximately 46%, versus 89%, for women diagnosed with breast cancer and 72% for women diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Awards in the 8K Run will go to the top three (3) overall lmen and women and to the tope three (3) in five-year age groups for men and women, from age 19-and under through age 70 and-over. Awards in the 8K Walk will go to the top five overall men and women. Post-race refreshments will be provided to all runner, walkers and one-mile fun run/wak participants.
