About This Activity
It starts at the Common at Lake Quannapowitt (Gazebo in front of the Church on Church Street.) You'll get to experience beautiful views as you make one entire loop around. There are a few little hills and curves as the course follows the lake. You complete the loop and finish where you began.
Come enjoy a beautiful walk or run around the Lake and help support families with children suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
The Make-A-Wish foundation will be located near the registration table.
*This race will be timed
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease. The motor neurons affect the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. It is a relatively common "rare disorder": approximately 1 in 6000 babies born are affected, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers.
Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy is dedicated to Advancing Research and Supporting Families by:
* Eradicating SMA by promoting and supporting research; * Helping families cope with SMA through informational programs and support; * Educating the public and professional community about SMA.
SMA is an autosomal recessive genetic disease. In order for a child to be affected by SMA, both parents must be carriers of the abnormal gene and both must pass this gene on to their child. Although both parents are carriers the likelihood of a child inheriting the disorder is 25%, or 1 in 4.
