About This Activity
As a result of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, numerous people experienced traumatic amputations, spinal cord injuries and other serious injuries. Initially, outside assistance was present in Haiti, but most immediate response organizations have vacated Haiti, leaving massive needs unmet. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and an estimated 10% of Haitians have a disability. The rehabilitation needs in Haiti continue to be extensive. Here's what we have been doing to help.
In late 2013, the Haiti Rehab Project opened a shop in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to provide a work space for individuals with disabilities. In 2014, we trained members of the Team Zaryen Amputee Soccer team to make walkers, canes and other items out of PVC pipe. These are being distributed throughout Haiti to medical clinics, orphanages, and directly to families in need. Members of the Wheelchair Basketball team also started a sewing and embroidery business at the shop. In 2015, our mission group provided woodworking skills training, and with the basketball team, began building mat tables and other items we need to open a rehab clinic in Haiti.
Our goals are to continue to provide skills training programs for those with disabilities in Haiti, to support adaptive sports vital to improving quality of life in Haiti, and to open a rehab clinic so we can reach out to so many individuals with rehabilitation needs in Haiti.
Your participation and donation will go directly toward the goals of the Haiti Rehab Project and positively affect the quality of life of individuals in Haiti. We appreciate any assistance you can give.
The Haiti Rehab Project is an organization whose mission is to support rehabilitation and medical clinics, orphanages, families, and outreach programs for those with special needs in Haiti.
