About This Activity
Femmes Natales, a French term meaning “native women,” is a nonprofit women’s service organization. The group serves the Thibodaux community, as well as other area communities, throughout the year. Only Thibodaux-born women are eligible to join the 30-member group. The beneficiaries for this year are Isaiah Barnett and St. Francis Vegetable Garden. In keeping with tradition, we will host the 37th Annual Femmes Natales Runabout on Sunday, October 2nd, 2016. Isaiah Barnett will be the primary recipient of this year’s Runabout. Isaiah is the son of Adrian Barnett and Brittany Ledet. He is a 17-month-old boy born with neuroblastoma, which is a rare but aggressive cancer that usually attacks infants and toddlers and is very painful. At seven months Isaiah began to get bruises and bulging around his eyes and his stomach. He was diagnosed as having stage 4 cancer, having spread to his eyes, frontal lobe, liver, right hip and femur, and all bone marrow. He has undergone 12 rounds of chemotherapy with 2 more scheduled as of now. He and his family have been virtually living in the hospital, and when they are out they spend mostly all of their time at home due to his weakened immune system from treatment. These past few months have been extremely hard on little Isaiah’s body and very heavy on his family’s hearts. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the St. Francis Vegetable Garden. The garden’s purpose is to grow and harvest vegetables and donate them to local food banks, provide a living, outdoor classroom for hands-on learning, and support local growers by educating the community on the importance of fresh, local food for health and the region’s economy.
