About This Activity
The Maritime Classic Road Race takes place at beautiful Bald Head Island, located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, just two nautical miles off the southeastern coast of North Carolina. Transpor- tation to the island is provided by passenger ferry or pri- vate yacht. The mainland ferry landing is at Deep Point Marina in Southport, approximately 30 miles south of Wilmington.
Site of Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest light- house, the island is a 12-thousand acre, boat-accessed residential and resort community with 14 miles of beaches, rolling dunes, freshwater lagoons, and an 800- acre martime forest. Approximately 10,000 acres of salt marsh, tidal creeks and maritime forest have been deed- ed to the State of North Carolina as a nature preserve.
With transportation on the island limited to electric golf carts and a speed limit of 18 miles per hour, it is truly a runner's paradise.
About the Old Baldy Foundation
The Old Baldy Foundation is a not-for-profit organiza- tion dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of the Old Baldy Lighthouse, the only remaining of three lighthouses that have stood on Bald Head Island.
In 2009, the Old Baldy Foundation acquired the first order Fresnel Lens that was originally housed in the Cape Fear Lighthouse (once located on the southeastern tip of the island) more than 100 years ago. When the Cape Fear Lighthouse was demolished in 1958, the lens was salvaged and eventually ended up in an antique shop in Wilmington. The Old Baldy Foundation is rais- ing funds to restore the glass portions of the lens and to build a new building to permanently store and display the lens to the public.
About Fresnel Lenses
A Fresnel lens is a type of lens originally developed especially for lighthouses. The design allows for lenses of a larger aperture and short focal length without the weight and volume of material required in conventional lens design. Compared to earlier lenses, the Fresnel lens is much thinner, thus passing more light and allowing lighthouses to be visible over much longer distances.
