About This Activity
Join us for Sheboygan & Manitowoc County Heart Walk! Or come participate in our inaugural 5K Fun Run! We're going to "Scare Heart Disease" and have a costume contest, pumpkin decorating, and much more! But why? Health for health’s sake is rarely motivating. We need a reason to put down the candy bar, taking an extra walk, or fighting though tobacco addiction. So, why? do we do it? It’s simple really. life is why. Life and all the hopes and dreams that entails is the purpose behind the plan for health. Whether weddings or walks, sunsets or school plays, family, friends, or football, life is why. As I think about the people who have made the walk what it is, I realize that while their why is unique it finds a common bond of purpose in our mission. I think of Gerry, director of a local EMS service who has seen far too often the reality of heart disease and stroke on his calls. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and EMS protocols are what he gets from the American Heart Association. Golfing, kayaking, and trips to Arizona are the why in his life. I think of Bill who collapsed from a massive heart attack that left him in a coma for over a week. Groundbreaking research on induced hypo-cooling is what he receives from the American Heart Association. Time with his wife, memories with grandchildren, and telling stories are the why in his life. I think of Sara and her daughter Rayna, who suffered from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect until the age of four when surgery was able to correct it after a chance discovery. Advocacy for better testing for congenital heart defects and research for her surgery is what Rayna receives from the American Heart Association. Playgrounds, cartoons, a wedding someday; these are the why in her life. The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. These diseases, the Nation's No.1 and No.4 killers, claim more than 813,804 American lives a year. They account for 1 in 3 deaths in the Lakeshore Region. Whatever your why thanks to all our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you!
