AVAC Announces the Return of its Supersprint Triathlon

Run Meet-Ups, Cycle/Run Combo Classes and Adult Triathlon Swim Club Available to Help Residents Train; Triathlon to Benefit San Jose’s Turning Wheels for Kids Organization

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Almaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC), the Bay Area’s premier, award-winning family facility offering total health, fitness and wellness programs for all ages, today announced the return of its popular Supersprint Triathlon to be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015 after a 10-year hiatus. San Jose residents interested in training for the triathlon can sign up now for AVAC’s Run Meet-Ups, Cycle/Run Combo classes or Adult Triathlon Swim Clinics which start Monday, September 8, 2014.

AVAC Supersprint Triathlon is organized into three, specific events: a 400 yard swim in AVAC’s outdoor swimming pool, a 5-mile bike ride on spinning bikes, and a 2-mile neighborhood run. In the past, the event has drawn over 150 competitors each year, ranging from world-class athletes such as Becky Gibbs, Pete Kain and Shari Kain to amateurs between the ages of six to 60+. The event is open to all ages and fitness levels including professional athletes and beginners interested in the sport as well as families that wish to train together.

“AVAC introduced its first Supersprint Triathlon in 1983 to meet its members’ growing interest in the sport of triathlon,” said Jeff Griffith-Jones, GM of AVAC. “Since its inauguration, AVAC Supersprint has been a local favorite. We’re excited to bring it back to the community and encourage everyone to participate and help us raise funds for Turning Wheels for Kids.”

AVAC plans to donate a percentage of the triathlon proceeds to Turning Wheels for Kids, a San Jose nonprofit that provides bicycles, bike riding equipment, and bike safety education to underprivileged children.
