About This Activity

Team Pursuit Postal Challenge

"You're only as fast as you slowest swimmer"

USMS Sanction #: 344-S005

Who: All USMS members
What: Swim 1,650 yards for time as a 2 or 3 person team.
When: The swim must be completed between March 1, 2014 and April 12, 2014.  Results must be received by April 19, 2014.
Where: Any 25-yard pool
How: Each team will be made up of 2 or 3 swimmers.  In addition each team must have a dedicated timer/split recorder.  Each team will swim 1,650 yards in the same lane, and at the same time.  The idea is to swim as a team and take advantage of drafting.  The strategy will depend on the team size and speed of each team member.  Will you have your fastest swimmer lead the whole way and have the other team members try to hang on?  Will you take turns at the lead position?  It’s up to you.  We recommend practicing together before swimming the event.  See at "Paceline Swimming"
Teams may be female, male, or coed.  Age groups will be determined by adding each individual team member’s age (as of 3/1/2014) together.
Swimmers can swim in a line or in a “V” formation.  Care should be taken with turns.  We strongly suggest that you decide ahead of time how your will handle turns to avoid collisions.
The timer/split recorder will be responsible for recording the team’s time and splits on the attached split form.  The team’s time ends when the last swimmer touches the wall.  Splits must also be recorded, at a minimum, at 500 yards, 1,000 yards and 1,500 yards as the last swimmer touches the wall.

Why: Because it’s fun!  It will also show you how much drafting can help you in an open water swim or triathlon.

Awards: Awards will be mailed to the captain of each team of three fastest female, male and coed teams for each age group (ages determined as of 3/1/2014) as follows:
Two Person Team Age Groups
Three Person Team Age Groups
36 to 79
54 to 119
80 to 119
120 to 179
120 to 159
180 to 239
160 +
240 +
Results will be posted after all entries are received and awards will be mailed to the team captains thereafter.
Feedback: We would love to hear how your “team pursuit” time compares to your best 1,650 time.  Were you able to swim faster?  Were you slowed down by the other members of your team?
Entries: Entries can be submitted online, or through mail, and must be received by April 19, 2014.  Entry fees are $20 for a two person team and $25 for a three person team.  Paper entries can be mailed to:
