Check out the newest Athlete guide (third tab on the left of this screen) that talks about Travel restrictions, Aid Stations, Packet Pickup and Wave times! We have recently gotten communication that the Travel restrictions exempt those that live in Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and Washington DC. We ask that all others act responsibly and take the necessary steps to come to the race.
We have approval from the Maryland Department of Health for the event! With a capacity of 1000 runners, separated in waves of 200, spaced out by time, our new COVID Mitigation plan is posted on our site for YOU to look at. We are excited to bring IN PERSON road racing back to the area!!
Great questions coming in. Our plan is in the final review process with the State of Maryland, as we are asking for wave starts, separated by a determined amount of time, to allow for more runners. Please understand that we are working on this on a DAILY basis, and are adapting the plan as we get more feedback from local health entities.
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE RACE COULD BE CANCELLED
It could, yes. If there is a COVID spike or the State of Maryland makes a determination that we cannot have the event, then yes, it would be cancelled. If that were to happen, you would get your cost deferred for use in 2022 or 2023.
HOW MANY RUNNERS ARE YOU ALLOWING
The current plan is for 1000 runners. 400 marathon. 400 half, 200 5k. The plan is for four waves, of 200 runners each, for the longer distances, separated by 15 minutes.
WILL IT BE A STAGGERED START
See the above answer about the wave times. Runners will launch, from their wave, 6 runners at a time, with 5-10 seconds between starts. The runners will self-seed and all times will be CHIP time, instead of a singular gunshot. This means your time is unique to you, and starts when you cross the start line.
WHAT WILL BE AT THE AIDE STATION
The current plan is for Water and Sports drink. There will be some pre-packaged foods (Clif Bars, Gels) too. The delivery system for the drinks is under review by the Health Officer right now. We are not sure if we are going to be able to have coolers for Water/Gatorade, manned by volunteers, to pour in to a vessel the runner will carry (think silicone, crushable cup), or if we will need to do individual, small bottles of water and Gatorade.
WILL AID STATIONS BE MANNED
There will be volunteers there, but they will not be passing anything to runners. They will be there to either operate the coolers, or to restock items once runners have taken them.
2019 was an AMAZING year for our inaugural Marathon and we were building for an even better year in 2021! With Maryland's Executive order coming just 2 weeks before the race, RunSBY was probably one of the first events affected by COVID-19 in the region. We are here to make that up to you!!! Whether you were a 2020 registrant, or are just looking for your NEXT (or first) Marathon or Half-marathon, this course is pancake flat with historically cool temperatures. Perfect for your next Boston Qualifier! With just under 10% of our Marathoners qualifying for the 2020 Boston Marathon entry, this race is getting well known for being a great BQ event! And let's not forget our Half Marathon on the same course for 11 miles! Not ready for 26.2 or 13.1, well then try out our #RunSBY 5k event. With a start at the main finish line for the Full and Half, you are right in the mix of things when your day is over.
The Marathon has a 7 hour time limit (16 min/mile) and shares the first 10.8 miles with the half marathon, so our friends who are only half-crazy will still need to maintain that 16 minute/mile pace.
Did you know that our course is not only USATF certified (Full and Half) but is designed for our Physically Challenged athlete friends as well? Special categories exist if you are physically challenged or if you are part of a team or group that helps our Physically Challenged friends!
Come see what all of the buzz is about. With aide stations every 1.5 miles and port-o-johns at every one of them, you will find this course is one of the best supported races on the East Coast.
We are in constant communication with our local Health Department and are working on strategies that will ensure that we are able to provide a safe event for you to compete in! We are completely transparent in all that we do and as soon as we know something, YOU will know something.
We hope that you will join us in Salisbury for the 2021 RunSBY Events, being held Saturday, April 3rd!
