About This Activity
What? A 45-minute core strengthening class geared toward runners
Where? Gallagher Fitness Resources, 135 Commercial St NE in downtown Salem
When? Every Thursday, starting September 4th and running through October 16th, 2014
Why? Are you looking to increase your flexibility? Have you been told you have a glute muscle that doesn’t fire when you run? Do you feel like your core is weak? Your core is the fulcrum of your body. It not only includes abdominal muscles, but also the back, obliques, hips, and glutes. If the fulcrum is weak, the stride-length may be altered, the hips may dip, the legs may kick out to the sides, and injuries may eventually stem from improper runner mechanics. This class will help strengthen the core, and in turn help improve your form, minimize the chance of injury, and make you an overall stronger and fitter runner!

What to expect: Exercises like planks, leg circles, clamshells, and donkey kicks will have you quickly discovering that you don’t just have to run miles to break a sweat and feel your running muscles burn. No matter where you are in your running journey, these workouts can help you get fitter, stronger, and faster. As with any fitness activity, please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns before you start this exercise program.
What to bring: A yoga mat or towel and a water bottle.
Who’s the coach? Anna Denn is a certified Spencer Pilates Instructor; an adjunct instructor of Running at the University of Oregon; the founder and head coach of her personal coaching entity, Happy Running, LLC; an avid runner; and a Pilates enthusiast. Back in 2011, a knee injury left her unable to run for months. She discovered a style of Pilates that tested the strength and endurance of her running muscles and left her on the mat sweating, exhausted, and with a runner’s high! When she returned to running, her form was better, she felt stronger, and was running faster. Now she wants to share Core for Runners with you to help you gain these same benefits in your own running journey.

I am aware that core strengthening or any other involvement in any sport can be a dangerous activity involving MANY RISKS OF INJURY, including, but not limited to the potential for catastrophic injury. I understand that the dangers and risks of core strengthening include, but are not limited to, death, injuries, falls, contact with other participants, all such risks being known and appreciated by me. I recognize that HR is not obligated to attend to any of my medical or medication needs, and I assume all risk and responsibility therefore. In case of medical emergency occurring during my participation in HR C4R, I authorize in advance the representative of HR to secure whatever treatment necessary. HR may (but is not obligated to) take any actions it considers to be warranted under the circumstances regarding my health and safety. I release HR, its employees, coaches, volunteers, agents and assigns from all liability for any bodily injury or damage I sustain as a result of any medical care that I receive resulting from my participation in HR C4R, as well as any medical treatment decision or recommendation made by an employee or agent of HR.
Knowing the risks described above, and in voluntary consideration of being permitted to participate with HR, I agree to release, indemnify, and defend HR and their officials, officers, employees, agents, volunteers, and sponsors from and against any claim which I, the participant, my parents or legal guardian or any other person may have for any losses, damages or injuries arising out of or in connection with my participation with HR.
