About This Activity
ROCHESTER RISES TO SUPPORT THE WOMEN OF CITY OF JOY IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
The annual 5K run/walk raises money for survivors of sexual warfare.
Rochester – June 6, 2015 – Rochester families unite in the fight against sexual and physical abuse of girls and women on June 6thfor the City of Joy 5K race. Now in its fourth year, the annual event raises money for City of Joy, a revolutionary and transformational left for survivors of gender violence in Bukavu, Congo. This year’s event will be held at Soldiers Field Park from 10am-12pm.
“At City of Joy the women are planting the seeds of revolution. They are beginning to take back their power and their bodies, and now we can see the change…” stated Christine Schuler Deschryver, Director Of City of Joy.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has been called the rape capital of the world. Since 1996, sexual violence against women and girls has been used as a weapon of war to torture, humiliate and destroy not only women and girls, but entire families and whole communities. The barbaric civil war being waged there is the most lethal conflict since World War II and has claimed over 8 million lives and over 500,000 women have been raped. Sexual violence has left many survivors with genital lesions, traumatic fistulas, severed and broken limbs, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.
The City of Joy is a transformational leadership community for women survivors of violence. Conceived, owned, and run by local Congolese, the City of Joy has flourished since it first opened its doors in June 2011, healing women from their past trauma through therapy and life skills programming while providing them with the essential ingredients needed to move forward in life – love and community. Serving 90 survivors of gender violence aged 18 to 30 at a time, in six years the City of Joy will graduate over 1,000 women leaders. For information about City of Joy, visit: drc.vday.org
