Community Chest of Port Washington 5 Mile Thanksgiving Day Run
Thu, Nov 27, 2014
Port Washington, NY
About This Activity
The 39th annual Port Washington Thanksgiving Day 5 Mile Run, beginning at 8:30am is a scenic loop run through four villages in Port Washington. It starts on Manorhaven Boulevard just outside the Manorhaven Beach Park, proceeding up Cow Neck Road to Middle Neck Road, turning south onto Middle Neck Road to Sandy Hollow Road, proceeding to Shore Road and returning via Manorhaven Boulevard to the finish line in Manorhaven Park. The event includes sponsor giveaways, contests, raffles and a finish line massage tent. All participants receive a long-sleeved commemorative T-shirt; finishers receive a medal and awards are given to the top three finishers, male and female, and to the winners in 16 distinct age categories.
The event is sanctioned and certified by USATF. The Port Washington Thanksgiving Day Run is Nassau County’s largest Thanksgiving Day race. We expect the 2014 race to sell out with a 3,000 participant limit, so register early to ensure a spot. Timing of the race will be by Finish Line Road Race Technicians.
Use this address for GPS: Manorhaven Park, Manorhaven Blvd., Port Washington, NY 11050
From the Long Island Expressway, Exit 36: Go north approximately 4 miles to Main St., Port Washington. Turn left. Take Main St. to Shore Rd. Turn right. Take Shore Road to Manorhaven Blvd. Turn left. Start is adjacent to Manorhaven Park-- approximately ¼ mile on left.
Participants are urged to carpool, arrive early and park in Soundview Marketplace (on Shore Road) or Sousa & Manorhaven elementary school parking lots where there is free parking. Manorhaven Park parking lot closes at 7:30 AM or whenever the lot is full. Local roads close at 8AM.
We do not have a bag check available at the race. If you discard an article of clothing along the race course we cannot guarantee it will be retrieved. We will make every effort to pick up clothing as the course is closed down. Any retrieved articles will be kept at the Community Chest of Port Washington after the race. Any item left more than two weeks will be donated to one of our grantee organizations.
The race course will re-open to traffic between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. on a rolling basis. All remaining runners/walkers will be able to continue the race on the sidewalk. Race timing will continue for all runners and walkers until 10:45 a.m. There will not be any support for the runners or walkers along the race course after 10:45 a.m.
Medical aid will be available along the race course route, at the mid-way water stop and near the finish line.
Timing and Results
Timing and Results will be calculated by Finish Line Road Race Technicians. Results will be posted at the finish line and at www.FLRRT.com. We will be using the Chronotrack B-Tag disposable chip system, with the chip on the back of the race bib.
Start and Finish Tips
Get to the race early! Plan on arriving at least a half hour before the race starts as traffic and parking could cause some delays.
Dress warmly if it’s chilly, but don’t overdress. Dress in layers which you can peel off and either tie around your waist or leave at the mid-way water stop. Discarded clothing will be collected by race volunteers, delivered to the Community Chest staff and if not picked up, donated to a local charity. We can’t guarantee that all discarded clothing will be retrieved.
Please practice common race courtesy. Line up by the appropriate pace sign, based on your expected finish time. In other words, if you know you are going to run a 50 minute 5-mile, please line up by the 10 minute pace sign. If you are running with a group, please do not run more than three abreast in the early stages of the race as, again, this makes it difficult for faster participants to pass. If you are walking, please start in the rear of the pack.
Be sure to pin your bib to the front of the shirt you will be wearing as you cross the finish line
Please thank a volunteer anytime you see one before, during, or after the race. This event would not be possible without them!
You’ve finished! Make sure to have your head up and smile as you cross the finish line to ensure the best possible photo by Island Photography (www.islandphoto.com or 767-1234).
Keep moving as soon as you cross the finish line. Volunteers will be waiting to give you your hard-earned medal, water and apples, and provide you with whatever post-race assistance you need. Continuing to walk through the finish chute prevents that area from getting backed up.
Once you leave the finish area, meet family and friends, and relax. Even if it’s cold and you don’t feel as if you’ve sweat, you still need to drink plenty of fluids!
