About This Activity

The  Morris Doc Turner 5K Run Walk & Health Fair is hosted by the Highland Park Tennis Club, HPTC, in honor of its late, highly esteemed member and friend, Dr. Morris E. Turner. Morris joined HPTC during its inception in 2002.  Dr. Turner was an internationally known, scholar, obsterician, gynecologist and educator who held practices and taught in Pittsburgh, Pa and surrounding cities for over 40 years.

Hundreds of thousands of families were healed, blessed, served and delivered in many ways, by  Dr. Turner's skillful hands and words. We are speaking of a man who walked from the Point Breeze area of Pittsburgh to Magee Women's Hospital in Oakland in the snow to deliver a baby because the roads in the City were paralyzed with several feet of snow and the roads were impassable.

"To Know Him Is To Love Him."

The event is held to 1) keep Dr. Turner's name, legacy, mission to educate and serve the underserved alive 2) raise funds to grant HPTC Morris Doc Turner Scholarships to individuals majoring in some aspect of the medical field and to support HPTC's free summer tennis clinic.

EVENT DETAILS

The 2016 Morris “Doc” Turner 5K Walk Run & Health Fair promises to be a stellar event. The race winds through Highland Park which is located in the Highland Park area of Pittsburgh, PA. This year, the race course has a loop design and starts at the tennis courts located in front of 6701 Stanton Avenue and heads towards the intersection of Stanton/Herberton/Meadow, near Dilworth School. It turns around near Violin Way and Stanton Avenue, and heads back down Stanton Avenue to the tennis courts. The course continues into the park off Stanton, onto Lake Drive. Upon reaching the Zoo parking lot for employees, the runners/walkers turn around and head back to the tennis courts, where the race ends. This is an easy run with one small incline in the road.

1 MILE ROUTE ADDED

Don’t think you can do the 5K?  No problem.  A 1mile route has been added. You start at the same point as the other runners/walkers, however, at the ½ mile mark, you turn around and head back to the finish line. No prizes will be awarded in this category.

The sights include: picnic groves, trees of various species, a marvelous floral garden, a fantastic super playground, a new sand filled volleyball court, a large, race regulated swimming pool and a lake stocked with fish which many ducks call home. The race ends at the Highland Park Tennis Courts on Stanton Avenue at the Morris Doc Turner Center Court.

Health care partners of all kinds will disseminate information about their services and products. To further liven up the event, yoga, music, exercise, tennis, and line dancing will occur during and after the race for all to enjoy.

Come, bring a lawn chair and be prepared to relax and stay awhile as you rejuvenate after the race. Feel free to take part in the activities or just sit back and chill. One thing is for certain, you will meet some wonderful people.

As an added feature, the Pittsburgh Zoo will be open and ready for your visit. There is an admission fee.

UPMC Health Plan, Magee Women’s Hospital of UPMC, Community Care and Behavioral Health, and the Highland Park Tennis Club are the major sponsors of this event.
