About This Activity

Sue Hoheisel is a 41 year old resident of Pierz, MN; she is a happy, fun loving and energetic wife (married to Jess Hoheisel) and a mother of three beautiful children (Hunter (10), Jenna (9) and Kate (5). Sue is a very active person, who loves being with her family and friends and watching her children play sports. Sue also enjoys her job as an occupational therapist at the Brainerd hospital, as well as traveling, taking part in color runs and spending time at the lake.

Last November Sue started to have severe abdominal cramping and went in for a pelvic ultrasound in December and an ovarian mass was discovered. Sue underwent surgery at the U of M on December 23 to remove the mass. During the surgery the doctors performed a total hysterectomy, removed her appendix, removed 19 lymph nodes and removed the omentum. At this time Sue was diagnosed with Stage 1 ovarian cancer and biopsies were sent for further testing. On January 6, Sue and her family received the devastating news that she had colorectal cancer and this is where the primary source (it originated in the colon and then spread to other areas) of the cancer. During the month of January, Sue underwent several tests and had multiple appointments with the doctors at the U of M in order to find out what she was dealing with and what her options were. Sue was informed that she now has Stage 4 colorectal cancer that metastized to the ovaries and the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal wall). Sue was determined to beat this and went in for further testing at which time a PET scan was done at the U of M and revealed that there are 3 small spots on her lungs that are cancerous, as well as some lymph nodes in her pelvic area that seem to be cancerous. Since her cancer had spread outside her abdominal area, she was no longer a candidate for colon surgery or the HIPEC procedure. Sue is a fighter and never once stopped fighting and on January 26th, she had a port placed in her in order to receive her chemo treatments through IV. Sue had her first chemo treatment on January 27th. The effects of chemo caused her to suffer from nausea and severe cramping. However, Sue is a survivor and kept her head up and kept pushing forward and went back to work on February 3! Sue will continue with chemo treatment every 2 weeks at the U of M. Sue is scheduled for a CT scan on March 30th, this scan will reveal how the chemo is working on the cancer and whether or not she will be a candidate for another surgery.

Sue is such a positive and loving person, she has a million watt smile and is the first person to volunteer and lend a hand. Sue is loved and respected by so many people within our community that it was natural for everyone to want to help Sue and her family in any way possible. Along with the community, her parents Lloyd and Donna Boeder, her siblings John and his family, Lisa and her family as well as Sue and Jess’s immediate and extended family are standing SUE STRONG and will help Sue through this difficult time.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and getting to know Sue and her story. Also thank you for all the prayers, words of encouragement and support. It is greatly appreciated by Sue, her family and friends.
