About This Activity

Give Cancer the BOOT is a Walk / Run Benefit being sponsored by Lightfoot Elementary and Unionville Elementary Schools in order to raise funds in support of Savannah Cox, who was recently told that she is now a survivor. In addition, funds are also being raised in memory of UES Nurse Amy Panebianco.  Funds raised for this event will be benefitting UVA Children's Hospital, Pediatric Cancer Research and a Scholarship to be presented to a Senior Graduating from Orange High School, who aspires to follow in the footsteps of Nurse Amy, by becoming a nurse.

A day of fun is planned for all ages.  We will be using Veterans Park in Orange, VA, behind Orange Elementary School.  There will be live music to walk or run too, entertainment for our youth and for those not wanting to walk or run, enter the Corn Hole Tournament.  So bring the family out, pack your lunch and enjoy what will clearly be a wonderful day. Your support will make a difference, help change the outcome of a child's life and honor a wonderful beacon of light in our community.

Amy Panebianco was a nurse, a wife, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a daughter, a friend, and a Warrior. She had an incredible sense of style and loved wearing her cowgirl boots! Amy lived her life with kindness and generosity and she touched the lives of all who knew her. She enjoyed caring for the sick, but the kids, who so lovingly addressed her as NURSE AMY, were her heart. She enjoyed crafting, painting discarded furniture to make it beautiful again, and running. Aside from her hobbies, Amy loved reading, traveling, and spending time with her family, friends, and her furry companions. Inspired by Amy’s courage and her desire to be a stronger, healthier person, UES and LES have organized this Inaugural Walk/Run 5K to “Give Cancer the Boot”. The battle may have taken her, but we will celebrate the strong woman she was and the battle she fought.

Savannah Cox is a student from Unionville, which is located in Orange County. Savannah has a love for art, is a pleasant and happy little girl who participates in Kids Hope, 4-H Cloverbuds and clogs with the Heart of Virginia Cloggers.  In January of 2014, Savannah was diagnosed with a Rhabdoid tumor, a rare and aggressive type of cancer that normally does not respond well to treatment.  Savannah can happily say today that “I Beat Cancer”.   She is a very grateful little girl who knows that the support from the doctors and nurses over the course of her battle recovery would not have been what it is today without cancer research.  They believed in her and she in them.  This is why she wants this benefit walk/run to go towards children’s cancer research so that other little boys and girls can receive the same treatment and glorious results like as her.
