About This Activity

This race is dedicated to Major Megan Malia-Leilani McClung, an avid runner, tri-athlete and seven time Ironman, was mortally wounded when her Humvee struck and IED in Iraq in 2006.  In memory of Major McClung, this annual event has been established to benefit the Semper Fi Fund (a non-profit 501(c)3 charity.) established in 2004 to provide financial aid and quality of life solutions for navy and Marine heroes and their families who have given so much in service to our country.

All runners receive a t-shirt and a commemorative chip.

The race course is in beautiful Oak Harbor, WA.

Temperatures are more moderate on the leeward side of Whidbey Island and may register 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the “official” reading taken at NAS Whidbey Island.

Event details and schedule

Race Registration begins at 8am at Flintstone Park.  We will have the presentation of colors at 9:30 am and the National Anthem will follow. The 5K runners will start at 10:00; the 10K runners will start at 10:30. Finish line will be at Windjammer Park. Bayshore road will be shut down for the start of the race from Dock Street to Pioneer street. Please dress according to weather. Please sign the waivers on the registration page, if you forget, we will have them at bib pick up. Parking not be available anywhere on Bayshore ave, but there will be plenty of surrounding parking.

The 7th annual Megan McClung takes place on a scenic, point-to-point course at the end of summer. The 5k and the 10k start at Flintstone Park on Bayshore road. The 5k runs .2 miles along the closed road to Pioneer street. This is where the 10k will continue on to Pioneer Way, along the water. At the top of the hill, you will run through Veterans Memorial Park. Continuing on, stay to the right and run behind the Oak Harbo Yacht Club. The route will take you along the marina where the 10k runners will go through the gates and onto Maylor Point. Runners will turn around at the point and circle back. There will be a water station for the 10k runners as they exit the marina. 10k route will bring you back to Bayshore road where you started and then take you along the same route as the 5k. The 5k then makes a loop and runs back down Bayshore road to Flintstone Park starting line, heads through the parking lot, along the boardwalk with direct views of the water. Due to construction, the route then turns to the right, between the ball fields and the condos. They run back onto Bayshore, take a right on City Beach Road, then a left onto Pioneer way. Once runners hit Pioneer way, they will be directed onto the sidewalk for safety. The road will not be closed. Running along old Pioneer way, they will follow the cones to take a left at Beeksma Drive where they will find a police officer directing traffic to ensure a safe crossing to Bayshore road. Runners will fallow the course monitors direction to drop down on the the beautiful pathway up to the Scenic Heights Trailhead. There they will make a turn around, and head out and around the Freund Marsh Trail. Runners will enjoy a jog around the grass and dirt trail. Runners may even catch a glimpse of an Eagle circling above. After the Freund Marsh Trail, runners will enter back onto the trail and head for Windjammer Park. Once you cross the street into the parking lot of the park, follow the trail to the right and enjoy the Bay on your right and the lagoon and windmill on your left. Circle around, through the trees to the finish line by the gazebo. After you finish, please stay to enjoy the Military Appreciation Picnic with food and live music.
