April is National Autism Awareness Month. Join the Heartland Endurance Sports in getting involved with the autism community - register for one or both of our Autism Superhero Series of races, which is an excellent opportunity run a 5K or 10K, for a purpose, to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year. In 2015, with your support, our Autism Superhero Series of races helped to raise over $4000 for Autism Speaks and the Autism Society of Indiana. These are great causes, near and dear to our heart at Heartland. Join us for this annual series again in 2016!
Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum disorder” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause of autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today. Some of the behaviors associated with autism include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation; difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning; narrow, intense interests; poor motor skills’ and sensory sensitivities. Again, a person on the spectrum might follow many of these behaviors or just a few, or many others besides.
Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that although it is defined by a certain set of behaviors, children and adults with autism can exhibit any combination of these behaviors in any degree of severity. Therefore two children with the same diagnosis may differ greatly in their behavior, their capabilities, and their needs. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) includes classic autism, as well as Asperger syndrome and the less specific classification of pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). For the purposes here, ASD and the more general term “autism” will be considered equivalent and used interchangeably.
While there is no single cause or cure for autism, it is treatable. Children do not outgrow autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes.
