We could tell you a lot about Japanese culture that we don’t really understand or we could tell you that the Ekiden is a really cool relay race created in Japan and that relays are mad fun. Go get your bestie or three of your besties and sign up for The New York City Ekiden today.
Learn more about the history of the Ekiden on Wikipedia if you like, but the NYC Ekiden is comprised of four equal legs each of which is approximately 5 kilometers long. The course will be similar to our standard 5K course seen here.
Only 2 and 4 person teams are allowed and you must alternate runners at each leg. What are the categories? Open (anything goes), Female, Male, and Co-Ed (equal # of men and women) in both the four-person and two-person relay. That’s a total of eight winning teams!
This race will be electronically timed, but there’s a twist. In a traditional Ekiden, the runners wear a sash that is passed from runner to runner. After you cross the timing mat, you must hand the sash to the next runner.
Time Limit: Your team must complete the Ekiden in 3 hours.
Awards: Awards will be given to the winning relay team in each category.
Packet Pickup: Pre-race packet pickup TBD. Raceday packet pickup will be available beginning at 7:30 AM. We strongly encourage you to pick up your race materials in advance of race day to avoid lines.
Amenities: Bag check and toilets will be provided. Bagels, spreads, fresh fruit and more will make up the usual great NYCRUNS post race spread. The giveaway for this race will be a technical t-shirt.
Directions: Take the F train or Tram to Roosevelt Island. All pre- and post-race activities are on Firefighters Field, a short walk from public transit, just north of both starting areas and just south of the finish. Please checkMTA Trip Planner for up to date and detailed mass transit directions and Google Maps for driving directions. Parking is limited at all of our events, we strongly encourage you to use mass transit.
Cost: $70 per 2 person team and $120 per 4 person team through 5/1. $80 per 2 person team and $140 per 4 person team through 7/3. $90 per 2 person team and $160 per 4 person team until online registration closes on 8/3.There will be no registration once online closes. NYCRUNS members receive a 10% discount, race deferral rights, and other perks. Race day registration (if available) is cash only. Register early and save us all a lot of hassle!
The standard no-refunds, no-deferrals, no-transfers policy applies, unless you are signed up for the NYCRUNS membership program.
Headphones & Earbuds: We recognize that many of you run best with music or audiobooks but to ensure your safety and the safety of others, please do so in a manner that allows you to be aware of your surroundings. We’d prefer that you leave one ear unobstructed by only wearing one earbud at all times. If at any time NYCRUNS Staff or Volunteers see that you do not heed the directions of a course marshal or your awareness is otherwise hindered by your headphones or earbuds, you may be disqualified.
