About This Activity
Come run a different distance in a new part of town! The Lower Ninth Ward and Holy Cross offer a unique view of our favorite city. The Green Project and lowernine.org are partnering to sponsor a 9K run in the Ninth Ward - and we have a 5K option, too*!
The Green Project and lowernine.org are working every day to make building and rebuilding affordable for families across New Orleans. Whether you're still waiting to come home, or working on the home you've lived in all your life, affordable materials and labor will make your work easier.
Runners will traverse the neighborhood and get tuned in to the organizations’ missions on the way with educational signage along the route, bringing meaning to the sights along the route.
Not lucky enough to be in New Orleans? Participate in the virtual run and run at home: create a team of sponsors to run or donate with you!
The Green Project works to develop a culture of creative reuse by building a marketplace for reclaimed materials and cultivating a respect for their value. In carrying out this mission, their warehouse store diverts an average of 6 tons of usable materials from landfills EACH DAY, and keeps 40,000 gallons of paint from finding Louisiana’s marshes annually through the Gulf South region's ONLY paint recycling facility. They provide environmental education for schools and host monthly sustainability workshops for the community. You can visit The Green Project’s warehouse store at 2831 Marais Street. www.thegreenproject.org
lowernine.org is a non-profit organization dedicated to the long-term recovery of New Orleans’ historic Lower Ninth Ward from Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches of 2005. Since 2007, they have been using volunteer labor to help pre-storm residents of the Lower Ninth Ward to rebuild and repair their homes, bringing the cost to rebuild down to 30% of market rate. They’ve completed 83 full rebuilds, over 250 smaller home repair and maintenance projects, and brought home more people to this neighborhood than any other single entity. Their goal is to help all pre-storm residents who wish to return to their neighborhood to be able to do so and to keep residents in safe, livable housing. www.lowernine.org
