About This Activity

Come be apart of the 1st annual Cardboard Boat Race put on by the MTSU LSTS program. Participants will build and race a boat made of nothing more than cardboard and duct tape. The race is going to be held at the MTSU Rec Center on NOVEMBER 15, 2014.

Where: MTSU Campus Recreation Center 1848 Blue Raider Dr. Murfreesboro, TN 37130

Price: $15 per boat 2 riders required, AFTER OCTOBER 31, 2014: $20 per boat; optional $7 t-shirt (deadline: Nov. 7th, 2014 @7:00pm)

Basic Rules

  • 2 riders per boat
  • Must use ONLY cardboard and duct tape
  • Must wear lifejacket at all times in the pool
  • Teams MUST PROVIDE their own cardboard and duct tape
  • Lifejackets and Paddles are provided for teams

Rules and Regulations

 Boat Construction

  1. Boats must be made of cardboard and duct tape ONLY. (No sealants, paint, etc.)
  2. Decoration is allowed and encouraged, but it must be with duct tape that comes pre-colored. (cannot paint duct tape)
  3. If any illegal items are used in the construction of your boat, your team will be disqualified or forced to rebuild before due date and time.
  4. Boats must be dropped off outside on Friday, November 14, 2014 at the Campus Recreation loading docks (1848 Blue Raider Drive, Murfreesboro, TN 37132; docks are located on the east side of the building) before the race between the hours of 2:00 p.m. a.m. and 6.00p.m. for inspection. It will be held in a secure environment until your team races.
  5. Keep in mind that the doors to enter the pool area are 6 feet wide and 9 feet tall. Your boat must be able to fit within these doors.
  6. The team must be able to exit the boat quickly in case of emergency.
  7. Boats may ONLY be propelled through the use of paddles. (i.e. no swimming and pulling/pushing, no motors, etc.)

Participants and Racing

  1. A team CANNOT race until they have signed the proper forms and received a wristband.
  2. Each team will consist of two participants.
  3. Team members must remain in the boat (as well as possible) for the duration of the race.
  4. Team members MUST wear a PFD (personal flotation device) for the duration of the race.
  5. Team members must adhere to all MTSU Recreation Center Rules. For more information, visit http://www.mtsu.edu/camprec/ or call their office at (615) 898-2104.
  6. Teams are to exhibit sportsmanlike behavior. If a team is found to be disruptive or detrimental to the event, they are eligible for disqualification as determined by the event staff.
  7. The team and the boat must travel the full length of the pool twice. The team and their boat must reach the opposite end of the lane, turn around, and return to where they began. The first team to complete this is the winner of that heat.
  8. Once the heat is finished, each team is responsible for removing their boat and materials from the water.
  9. A heat will consist of five boats at most.

Judging and Awards

  1. A panel of 3 judges will hand out awards.
  2. Categories for awards consist of:
    1. Winning a race
    2. Most Creative Boat
    3. Criteria for judging the Most Creative Boat include:
      1. Use of duct tape
      2. Originality
      3. Creative Theme
      4. All judge decisions are final and indisputable.
