Mount Jackson, VA
About This Activity
MAYOR-A-THON was an idea that newly elected Mayor J.G. "Bucky" Miller had while running for office in 2014. Each year while in office he plans on choosing something/someone different to raise money for in the Mount Jackson area. This year he chose a trust fund set aside for the children of a childhood friend, Sarah Johnston Defren. Sarah was an active runner as well as participated in numerous 5ks, half marathons and marathons. Sarah passed away after completing a half marathon with friends in Frederick, Md. the spring of 2014 at the young age of 38. Sarah left behind a husband, 2 children and a large and loving list of family and friends. Mayor Miller felt that what better way to kick off his vision than by honoring Sarah with his inaugural MAYOR-A-THON. The event this year will be held the same weekend as what would have been Sarah's 20th class reunion from Stonewall Jackson High School and the Annual Fall Festival, both in her hometown of Mount Jackson, VA. The 5k will start at the beautiful Mt. Jackson Lions Club Park at the West end of Wunder St. Participants will enjoy a run through a local subdivision and through a field by our iconic apple basket water tower. From there you will head south through town on Rt. 11 as the 2014 Fall Festival is getting kicked off...the smell of apple butter boiling and BBQ will be your motivation to keep running. Participants will travel back into the subdivision and end at the Lions Club Park. This 5k is for all skill levels, the terrain is mixed with hard surfaces, field and various degrees of inclines. At the conclusion of the race Mayor Miller will be presenting the family with a check from proceeds of the event. We encourage all participants to stop by Main Street after the race to see what all Mount Jackson has to offer during the Fall Festival. We look forward in seeing you in October!
