With the recent rain last weekend and the condition of Southside Road, we recommend that riders use cyclocross bikes with durable tires and wheels. A tire with some grip would be nice as well. Also a mountain bike wouldn't be out of the question, especially if that is all you have to ride. I would only ride a road bike if you were very comfortable on rowdy terrain with your road bike and you are a pro racer or veteran racer. There are several sections on Southside road that are heavily laced with potholes, puddles, muds, and rocks.
85 OR 52 MILES. SPECTACULAR SCENERY, 33 MILES OF GRAVEL-GRINDING AND A POST-RIDE PARTY MAKE IT ALL WORTHWHILE. The Montana Hell Ride is based in the Big Flat Area of Missoula, MT (3300 Snowdrift Lane). The ride will start out mellow down Mullan Road. Eventually you hit a short dirt section on 9 mile road. You work your way to Alberton where the rest stop is. From there the 52 mile group embarks on the Southside Road, which is an all dirt road back to the start. The 82 mile group climbs Petty Creek to the Jack Saloon, then turns around and heads back the way they came, eventually hooking into Southside Road for the dirt finale. The aid station will have water, nutrition bars, gels, and fruit. There will be four support vehicles on course. They will have a floor pump and tool kit, but bring your own repair kit as well.
