About This Activity

Once finished, I planted myself in a chair and ate and drank for the rest of the afternoon. Everyone I talked with had the same overall sentiment: “I can’t wait until next year”. Yes, it’s a challenging ride at altitude, but the course’s scenery, lack of traffic (and stop lights), organization, and location, puts the Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo right up there with Levi’s Gran Fondo in Santa Rosa as one of the best rides I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in.  And yes, I can’t wait until next year.  - Neil Shirley, Assistant Editor, Road Bike Action Magazine Online Review, September 16, 2013

Chosen by Bicycling Magazine (June 2012) as a “Top-Ten Century Bike Ride” for its “Jaw-Dropping Vistas,” the Mammoth Fall Century and Gran Fondo ride takes you through breath-taking Mono County with views of Mono Lake, the majestic Eastern High Sierra and the White Mountains. The Gran Fondo and Fall Century routes are the same, 102.6 miles, and have the same rest stops, support and after-ride meal and festival, however, Gran Fondo riders will have timed ride results provided at the end of the ride based on age, gender and overall results.

The Gran Fondo and Fall Century routes start at "The Village" in Mammoth Lakes at 7am in a “Pro-Style” mass start with CHP traffic control to get the riders out of town safely and onto Highway 395 Northbound. Once on Highway 395, CHP will continue controlling traffic until the riders reach Hwy. 120 East.  On Hwy. 395 there are 8 foot bike lanes and some traffic for about 20 miles until making a right turn on Highway 120. Once on Highway 120, there will be minimal traffic for the majority of the ride and continuing jaw-dropping scenery. Only the last few miles of the ride have more, but not excessive traffic as riders head back to the finish line on Highways 395 and 203 to make their way back "The Village" and the completion of an epic ride!

The shorter Medio (70 miles) and Piccolo (42 miles) routes start at “The Village” in Mammoth Lakes at a relaxing 9am start time and are equally spectacular and offer options for riders of any ability. These routes are beautiful and challenging in their own right, but also feature long descents, beautiful scenery and great riding. With minimal traffic, beautiful pavement, full support and great rest stops, anyone from a novice rider on any kind of bicycle to a veteran cyclist can find something to enjoy on these routes and remember their experience as one of their best days ever on a bike.

On Friday, September 5th (the day preceding the Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo) the Mammoth Mountain Prologue Time Trial starts at 9am.  This will be a short 7.8 mile time trial, however, it is all uphill!  Starting at the junction of Hwys. 395 and 203, riders will depart at one minute intervals from an authentic Time Trial starting area and head down the starting ramp and up the hill toward the Town of Mammoth Lakes.  After climbing through most of Mammoth Lakes, riders will turn right on Minaret Road and head towards Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.  After covering the 7.8 miles and climbing 1648 feet, they will reach the finish line at the Main Lodge of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area passing under the Gondola cables and finishing near the Mammoth Mountain Inn to the cheers of festive spectators.  This Time Trial is open to all Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo participants and will provide riders an opportunity to test themselves against the other Time Trial participants and “the Mountain!  It is all in good fun - sign-up and give it a try!

At the completion of the Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo on Saturday, there will be an after-ride party with a great buffet meal, free ice cream, one free beer for each participant, live entertainment and the Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo Festival at "The Village" in Mammoth Lakes. All ride participants will receive a free T-Shirt and have their photos taken on course and prints provided to them free of charge at the end of the ride. Digital files of their photos will also be available for download free of charge.

The Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo is unique because the route is so remote that you can only, logistically, ride this ride with the help of the MFCGF volunteer staff who setup the rest stops, bring out the food, drinks, restrooms and provide on-course SAG and support. Once out of Mammoth Lakes, there are no stoplights, no gas stations, no lemonade stands.

Whether you are a veteran Century or Gran Fondo rider or a novice just taking off the "training wheels," the Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo has a route for you...and we want you to come and experience the amazing place where we ride, play and live!

If you are up for the adventure of a breath-taking bicycle ride that will certainly be a bucket-list experience, please join us in Mammoth Lakes for the Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo on the first Saturday after Labor Day each September!
