About This Activity

The Story Behind The Race

The University of Arkansas Little Rock is generously hosting our first 5K Fun Run on and around their beautiful campus.

This first of what we hope to make an annual 5K is to honor our children Katherine and Ryan and to raise awareness about Loeys-Dietz Syndrome with both the public and medical fields as it is a rare and relatively unknown gentic syndrome that affects connective tissue and leads to Aortic Aneurysms at a very young age.

Our family was totally unaware that this syndrome excisted until we were immersed in a living nightmare that started on August 18th 2013 when the police came to our door at 6am to inform us that our son had passed away. Ryan was 18 and had just checked into his dorm room on the UALR campus 3 days earlier and was due to start his first day of classes on the following day. We later found out that it was a devestating Aortic Aneurysm and dissection that took him from us.

In the following months after multiple tests my daughter Katherine and I were diagnosed with Loeys-Dietz. Katherine was 21 and only one credit and semester left before achieving her degree from UALR.

She had open heart surgery on June 2nd, 2013 during which she was exposed to a toxic enviromental mold called Rhizopus. After a long, hard, brave battle and multiple surgeries she passed away on August 17th 2014. A year to the day after her brother Ryan .

Since then we have been presented with Katherine's posthumous degree during the winter graduation ceremony at UALR.

We are having this 5K fun run to riase funds and donations that will be donated to research into Loeys-dietz and to the Katherine and Ryan Palludan Memorial Endowed Fund at UALR.

Katherine and Ryan both had full scholarships to attend UALR and we would like to help other young people attend college so they can fulfill their dreams and goals and realize that they can reach for the stars.

We hope you join us in this endeavor and have fun at the same time.

Event details and schedule

As this is our first fun run, we are not timing it as we need to get our feet well and truly wet before we reach that goal.

The fun run/walk will begin at 0930. We hope to do a Butterfly release to mark the beginning of the race.

The course is mostly flat with a few slight inclines as it starts on 28th street opposite the main campus and then winds through the beautiful campus where the dogwood trees will be blooming and we should have a gorgous arkansas day with mild tempuratures to enjoy.

The race headquarters will be set up in the Jack Stephens Center on 28th street and you may start arriving at 0800. There is plenty of parking space and restuarants close by. Bathroom facilities will be available within the Jack Stephens left.

Bring a smile and happy feet as well as proof of registration and ID.

The hospital in Pennsylvania where Katherine spent the last three weeks of her life had a buttefly tent and release set up one day and the smile that the butteflys put on her face will stay with me forever, and Ryan was the most avid Florida Gator football fan you could ever wish to meet in Hog territory. Hence the name of the race "Butterfly Swamp" we would love for participants to use their imaginations and dress in a green theme that includes butterflys, gators, swamp creatures or what ever else your imagination dreams up!!!!

The race is going to be informal and we hope a lot of fun. If you have any questions you may contact me at the above event web address, and check it for periodic updates. I hope you join us for some fun and a good cause. The race course map will be added once it is finalised Deb Palludan
