About This Activity
FAMILY FUN & FITNESS
Experience an exhilarating walk or run through beautiful Independence Grove in Libertyville! This event will benefit the IgA Nephropathy Foundation of America, a 501C3 Charity. Our theme is “Save the beans” as we are raising money to accelerate research for this kidney disease. Since it’s the weekend before Halloween, costumes are optional but encouraged to ramp up the fun factor!
What is IgA Nephropathy? IgA Nephropathy is one of the most common and undetected kidney diseases and occurs when IGA - a protein that helps your body fight infections - settles in the kidneys. This disrupts your kidney’s ability to filter waste and excess water from your blood. Over time, these IGA deposits may cause blood and protein in your urine, high blood pressure and swollen hands and feet. It can appear suddenly or, most often, progresses slowly over many years and can result in end-stage kidney failure. By the time the symptoms of kidney failure occur (swelling in the hands and feet, nausea, fatigue, headaches and sleep problems), total kidney failure is near. When total kidney failure occurs, patients will need dialysis or a kidney transplant.
The 1st Annual IgA Nephropathy Foundation of America SAVE THE BEANS Halloween 10K/5K Run & 2K Walk is being hosted by the Illinois Area Representatives for the IGAN Foundation of America. Special guests will include Bonnie Schneider, Founder & Chair or the IgA Nephropathy Foundation of America. Bonnie founded this organization 11 years ago after her son’s diagnosis and to date has raised over $700,000.00 for research. We are honored that Donald Jones, former wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots will also join us! Donald retired from the NFL due to IgA, and has just written a book “Second Chances”. Donald now serves on the Board for the IgA Nephropathy Foundation of America and is working hard to raise awareness and fund research for IgA.
