About This Activity

The Maco Light Legend is a familiar ghost story in Brunswick  County. The old Maco train ran on the back of the school property and race organizers have taken advantage of the folklore to help promote the event. The Maco Light Legend 5K and Fun Run is sponsored by The Roger Bacon Academy and Coastal Habitat Conservancy, among others.
This cross-country/haunted trail race is run through the woodland campus and includes the old train track trail known to be where the legendary Joe Baldwin ghostly light has been seen. The post-race party will feature vendor/sponsor booths, refreshments, entertainment and awards.
Participants are encouraged to register.  The pre-registration cost on or before Nov. 14 for the 5K is $25 and $30 day of the event. The pre-registration cost on or before Nov. 14 for the Fun Run is $10 and $15 after.
The first 200 pre-registered individuals will receive a free T-shirt. To keep runners and walkers hydrated during the race, the course will provide Maco Light Legend-themed water stations. To register, volunteer or sponsor the event, call Jean Lafave at (910)655-3600, ext. 235, or email at

Cross-country course on trails with the possibility of low visibility. Runners/walkers will be able to scout course before race. Tag timing system sponsored by Coastal Habitat Conservancy and provided by Brunswick Timing. Join us for a party after the race with refreshments, entertainment, awards, kids games, etc. 100% of race proceeds will be donated to the Fitness and Fine Arts program at Charter Day School,
