Walking-1K - Individual Age group/open
Running-5K - Individual Age group/open
About This Activity
April is Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Prevention Month. The H.E.L.P Advocacy Center of Southwest Oklahoma is a non-profit organization that spreads awareness about sexual violence against men, women, and children. At the H.E.L.P Advocacy Center, our goal is to provide victims of abuse with immediate advocacy support, support groups, medical and forensic treatment, across Southwest Oklahoma.
On April 11th, 2015 the H.E.L.P Advocacy Center will be hosting a walk at Elmer Thomas Park, in Lawton, Oklahoma, to raise $100,000 for a new safe-house in Lawton. We are asking the community to engage in prevention and awareness activities for kids, parents, teens, and young adults. The community leaders are starting off with a 5k walk/run in Elmer Thomas Park at 9am rain or shine.
The new safe-house will provide victims of Southwest Oklahoma, a safe environment for care, counseling, and help with how to get out of their violent situation. There are approximately forty-six million adult victims/survivors of child sexual abuse in America, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were victims of sexual abuse before they reached the age of eighteen years. Approximately seventy-three percent of victims of child sexual abuse don’t tell anyone about it for at least a year, forty-five percent wait as long as five years, and some victims never tell anyone about it. 1 and 6 adult women and 1 and 33 adult men are raped. We have to uncover the shame and stigma.
