About This Activity
The H.O.O.K.E.D. Teen Club (Helping Others Organize Kreative Everyday Differences) is hosting a fundraising 5K. The race will raise awareness of the dangers of underage drinking in Gwinnett County. Through their partnership with GUIDE, Inc. (Gwinnett United in Drug Education), the funds raised will enable youth leaders to attend this summer’s Georgia Teen Institute. “Alcohol Free Gets Me Where I Want to Be” 5K and Fun Run will be at Tribble Mill Park on April 26, 2014 during Alcohol Awareness Month, which is also peak prom and pre-graduation season. We want to reduce deaths and accidents in our community caused by underage drinking; we want our peers to thrive! • FACT: 25% of Gwinnett high school youth report binge drinking. • FACT: 30% of Gwinnett high school youth who drink, get alcohol from parents or other adults. • FACT: Youth allowed to drink at home are likely to drink elsewhere; they believe they have their parent’s approval. • FACT: In Gwinnett, alcohol use among youth is much higher than any other drug use. • FACT: Youth who drink before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol problems as an adult. • FACT: Underage drinking can harm brain development, lower brain capacity, cause permanent damage by reducing good judgment and memory areas of the brain, and can cause the brain to become addicted.
