About This Activity

KITWANA means destined to endure in Swahili.

The LEGEND KITWANA Off-Road Triathlon and Trail Run are being held on July 18th-19th at Clinton State Park in Lawrence, Kansas.  The two events will cover some of the most beautiful and challenging terrain that the Midwest has to offer.  Both Off-Road Triathletes and Trail Runners will each have the choice of 3 different distances to race.  Athletes that are looking for a true test can choose to participate in both the Off-Road Triathlon and the Trail Run!

Event details and schedule

Off-Road Triathlon Courses

The swim is a semi-rectangular course. Athletes will enter the water at the south boat dock, swim in a counterclockwise direction and exit back on the South Boat Dock. Athletes will have a short, 20-yard run to transition. They will then enter the NORTH end of transition and exit on the SOUTH end of transition.

The bike course trails are single track, dirt trails exhibiting rocks, tree roots, creek crossings, rolling hills and mile markers along the Blue and White trails of the Clinton North Shore Trail System.  The Blue Trail is considered easy to moderate difficulty while the White Trail is considered moderate to challenging. The Blue Trail is closer to the shoreline and the White Trail wanders up the various ravines away from the lake.   All trails will be well marked along the course leaving no room for confusion along the course.  One Aid Station will be located along the course for the Long Course Athletes.

The 3 Run Course distances will all cover a variety of hilly terrain consisting of dirt trails, grass trails, pavement and gravel roads.  The Run will take athletes to the highest point of Clinton State park before dropping runners down to the Clinton State Park Skills Loop.  Runners will test their agility as they cross creek beds and wind their way through the skills loop light obstacles.  Upon completion of the Run Course runners will return to the Finish Line located next to the Transition Area.

Awards will be given to the overall Top 3 Male and Female athletes in each race.

Awards will also be given to the winner of each Age Group.

Finisher Medals will be given to all athletes in all LEGEND KITWANA Off Road Triathlon races.

Finisher Medals will be given to all athletes in LEGEND KITWANA 10K and Half Marathon Trail races

Parking is located approximately ½ mile away from transition/finish.  Parking is inside Campground 3. Please follow directions of Parking Officials.

Clinton State Park is located on the northeast shore of Clinton Reservoir, just east of Lawrence. The park features campgrounds, a marina, a cross-country ski trail, a nature trail, a swimming beach, two 9-hole disc golf courses, as well as one of the longest and most popular mountain bike trails in Kansas.

The "North Shore Trail", as it's officially known, is a 25-mile trail that begins in the Corps of Engineers Park near the Clinton Lake Overlook on the northeast side of the lake. From the east trailhead, the trails meander westward along the shoreline and ravines throughout the park. The trails can also be accessed from many trailheads located within Clinton State Park.

The 2015 LEGEND KITWANA Off-Road Triathlon is sanctioned with USA Triathlon. USA Triathlon competition rules will apply. The complete list of rules can be found at the official USAT WEBSITE.

Each participant will need to either be an Annual USAT Member ($45) or purchase a single-event membership ($12) prior to the race. You may do so on-line or at the race site.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be postponed as long as possible in hopes the inclement weather will pass. No refunds or transfers will be issued if the event is canceled due to inclement weather.

Due to the number of race transfer requests and cancellations that occur in the weeks prior to a race we have adopted the following policy that is in accordance with USAT Policy.

Refunds will NOT be issued after a registration has taken place. Considerable effort goes into producing an event such as a triathlon and funds are expended and applied in good faith based on a registration.

If you would like to change your registration from one distance to another, you will be charged for the difference in price at the time of the change. If you would like to change your registration from the International distance to the Sprint distance, you will not be refunded the difference in price.

Transponders are non-transferable! Be careful not to switch your timing chip with other participants. The timing chip must be worn on your ankle at all times or you will not be scored in the event. If you wear it on your wrist, on your bike, in your pocket, etc., you will not be scored. Your timing chip will be removed by volunteers once you have crossed the finish line. Be sure your chip is turned in at that time or at some point before you leave the race. Failure to return a chip will result in a $125 replacement fee charge.
