Run Your Socks off 5K + a little extra

About This Activity

Dear DSA of SWLA Members and Supporters,
After careful consideration, The Down Syndrome Association of SWLA has made the difficult decision to cancel our Inaugural Run Your Socks off 5K+ on March 21st, due to risks associated with the coronavirus.  Our top priority is our members' and participants' health and safety.
Our decision to cancel our 5K was not taken lightly. It was made after closely monitoring updates and recommendations from Governor Edwards and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Individuals with Down syndrome with underlying conditions are at an increased risk for severe illness and complications from COVID-19.
Although we are all incredibly disappointed about this news, we are converting our run to a virtual 5K+.  We want those that are registered to go out and run or walk on March 21st while wearing your crazy socks.  Please post those pics to the Down Syndrome Association of SWLA Facebook page and get a chance to win a gift card to Rikenjaks or Panorama Music House.  Show your support for and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome.   We have already added a virtual runner option to our runsignup website for those who have not registered yet, but still wish to support our organization. Website:
When shirts get here which is expected any day, we will send out a day, time and place to pick up your run shirts next week
A HUGE Thank You to our sponsors: Walnut Grove, Lauberge Casino & Resort, Treasures of Marilyn’s, Sulphur Walmart, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital, Southern Running Company, Rickenjaks & Panorama Music House, Sonic, Hackett’s Cajun Kitchen, KVHP Fox 29, American Press The Lagniappe Magazine , Jay Bice, The Cards, Lil Couchon,  And Katelyn Hoffpauir Designs
If you need any additional information, please contact us at
Thank you so much for your understanding and support, and most importantly, we hope that you and your family stay healthy.
Happy World Down Syndrome Day and we look forward the 2021 Run Your Socks Off 5K +.
Melanie Sarro
Executive Director

The Down Syndrome Association of SWLA invites you and your family to participate in the inaugural, Run your Socks off 5k +, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day!  Our run will not be the traditional 5K (3.1 mile) but will be a 3.21-mile walk/run.  The 3.21 represents that individuals with Down syndrome carry 3 copies of the 21st chromosome.  So, our route will include that “little something extra”.   We have also had a small group of individuals with Down syndrome who have been training since September 2019 to run this event , so this will be their moment to shine and show our community their “capABILITIES”

We couldn’t think of a better day to host our inaugural run but on World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, 2020.  Our Annual Picnic will follow, and we invite all runners to stay and join us.  We are currently working on securing some exciting live entertainment to help us celebrate.
