About This Activity

ONE LAP FOR BRAGGING RIGHTS! The GATEWAY GRIND is a 11.3 mile trail race in Time Trial format. Awards will be given to the top 3 male/female overall times in the Junior, Beginner, Sport, Masters, Single Speed, Expert & Expert 40+ classes & a “King/Queen of the Hill” award for the best male/female time on the “Cardio Hill” climb. Deceptively challenging, the fast, double-track course features relentless climbs & a great section of the Carolina Thread Trail. “The speed will thrill ya, but the grind will get ya!”

$25 Before the Race / $30 On Race Day


The race is part of a larger event. The GATEWAY TRAIL MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL is held Fri/Sat, June 17-18 and features exciting outdoor activities the whole family can enjoy. The trail is open for walking, running and biking all day Friday, with the additional special events listed below. Saturday the trail is CLOSED to the public until after the Bike Race is Over around 11am.Bike rentals are available all weekend from Pinnacle Cycle Sport, less than 1 mile from the Gateway Trail. SATURDAY the main race event is the Gateway Grind, followed by recreational riding or hiking on the trail. LODGING is convenient, with Hounds Campground being beside the race course, featuring tent and RV sites, as well as available cabin rentals. Hotels are located within 3 miles of the Gateway Trail (Holiday Inn Express, Best Western, Super 8)


6-8pm   Free Kids Bike Rodeo presented by Safe Kids of Cleveland County. Visit learning stations to discover the Bike ABC’s, basic bike maint., bike signals/safety, and free bike helmet fitting.

6-8pm   Free 25’ Climbing Wall – A safe, fun climbing experience for all ages.

Dusk      Night Riding along the Illuminated Main Loop of the Gateway Trail, Bonfire with S’mores and Other Food Items Available for Free, and Camping/Movies at Hounds Campground/Drive-In (normal rates apply), right beside the Gateway Trail.

SATURDAY THE EVENT IS THE GATEWAY GRIND. The public is encouraged to attend and to cheer the racers on, but must stay off out of the racers way, especially in the curves where due to high downhill speeds they may lose control. Any children present will need direct and careful supervision.
