Kids Fun Run Information

New this year, in conjunction with the Heartland Half and 5k, there will be a Kids Fun Run and Festival on Friday, August 29th.  Festivities will include health and wellness booths, fitness activities, highlighted by a 1.1 mile Fun Run, which will complete a 12-week youth challenge. The Festival will take place at Dave Buehler Plaza from 5-8 pm with the Fun Run beginning at 6 pm.

Kids entering K-8th grade can stay active all summer with the Kids Fun Run. Here is how the youth challenge works: Register for the race and visit our website to print a copy of the Running Log.  Kids will run and log 12 miles in the weeks prior to August 29th.  Bring the completed Running Log on race day to be registered for exciting prizes. Visit the website to access the running log & route the day of the race.

Participants grades K-3rd are required to run with a Running buddy, 18 years or older. Running buddies will participate for free, but will not receive race garb.

Parents/guardians are required to attend.

The scheduled start time for the Kids Fun Run is 6:00 PM EST, which will be run in waves according to grade level.  Kids Fun Registration will be open from 5-5:40 PM and will take place at the Jasper Riverwalk parking lot near The Jasper City Mill, 160 Third Avenue.  Race day registration will be permitted.  Running buddies will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to the start of the race.

The Kids Fun Run is a non-competitive event and will not be officially timed. All paid participants will be awarded a medal upon completion of the race.  Post race photos will be available at the finish.

Race day registration will be available.

No fee for Running Buddy (Grades K-3) –will not receive race garb

The Festival is Free and Open to the Public!  Donations are welcome.

Registration for the Kids Fun Run is available by picking up a brochure, printing and mailing a registration form from the website at www.heartlandhalfmarathon.com, or online at www.active.com (additional processing fee). Race Registration includes a t-shirt, medal, and goody bag.  Shirt and/or size preference may not be guaranteed if registered after August 17, 2014.   The first 100 participants to register for the Kids Fun Run will receive a special gift.

Additional Gifts
The first 100 participants to register for the Kids Fun Run will receive a special gift.  All participants who complete their Running Log and submit it on Race Day (8/29) at the Registration table will be entered to win exciting prizes.

Kids Fun Run start line will be at the Jasper Riverwalk parking lot near the City Mill

Participants will proceed east across the 3rd Street footbridge to the Dave Buehler Plaza.

Run through Dave Buehler Plaza and adjacent Riverwalk parking area to 4th Street.

From 4th Street, take a right on McCrillus and continue north to 6th Street.

Take a right on 6th Street and run to entrance of Jasper Riverwalk.

Take a right on Riverwalk and run to the Official Heartland finish line at the east entrance of Dave Buehler Plaza.


Riverwalk Parking will be closed to traffic along Cemetery Drive, and on the west and east sides of Dave Buehler Plaza.  Additional parking is available in the gravel lot near Schaeffer Barn, which is short walking distance to the Dave Buehler Plaza.

Race Weather & Climate

Located just west of the Hoosier National Forest in southwestern Indiana, about 120 miles southwest of Indianapolis and roughly 80 miles west of Louisville, Jasper sees typical September temperatures that average between 80°F and 53°F, while rainfall averages just under 3.6 inches for the month. On the day of the race (Aug. 29), the average high is 84°F and the average low is 58°F.

Inclement Weather
Weather related information will be communicated with participants via email as well as through local media; WBDC-100.9 FM and WITZ–990 AM/104.7 FM.  The safety of our participants is first and foremost.

Proceeds from the Kids Fun Run and Festival will benefit Girls on the Run – serving Dubois County. This non-profit is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade, which will begin in the spring of 2015. The mission is to teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games.  “We believe that every girl --can embrace who she is, can define who she wants to be, can rise to any challenge, and can change the world.”
