About This Activity

Miles for Mike 5k is a race which was organized to help the Michael Clark battle Aplastic Anemia.

A member of our community needs your help! Michael Clark, from Sturbridge, MA, is a 2004 graduate of Saint John's High School in Shrewsbury, MA and a 2008 graduate of Bentley University in Waltham, MA. Mike was the captain of the SJ hockey team and continues to play pick up hockey. He and his wife Mandi (Rice, originally from Westborough, MA) have been together since 2001 are avid Bruins fans. They were recently married last year. Mike has worked as a price analyst at Hanscom AFB for the past 6 years. Mandi is currently pursuing her PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology at Boston University.
On June 3rd of this year, Mike was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. It is a rare autoimmune disease and there is no known cause. As many of you know, Mike is an extremely healthy, athletic guy so this has come as quite a shock. The only cure for this disease is a bone marrow transplant. Family members have been tested but with no success. The search for a matching donor is currently ongoing. It is expected that this will be a lengthy and costly process for Mike and Mandi.
Although they do have health insurance, there will be significant uncovered out-of-pocket expenses. Bills related to the search for a matching bone marrow transplant donor, weekly visits to MGH in Boston for blood transfusions, the regime to keep Mike healthy, the uncovered medications, the donor cost for the transplant and the long recovery time both in and out of the hospital will add up quickly. Any contribution you can make will be extremely appreciated!  Please keep sending prayers and good thoughts their way too!
