About This Activity

This race is dedicated to the memory of a dearly loved friend to many people, Richard Lee Sprow. Rich was known for his contagious smile, unmistakable laugh, and his tremendous zest for life. Adventure, friendship and the great outdoors were just a few of this former Eagle Scout's passions. High School allowed for Rich to make many fond memories on the track with his beloved classmates. Why "The Kick" ? This is a reference to the manner in which Rich was known for his ability to find another "gear" at the end of a race where he could run down or pull away from opposing competitors. His "kick" was legendary and everyone loved to watch as Rich executed his race day game plan.

Aside from being a fabulous runner and excellent woodworker, Rich made a career as a Paramedic and was a volunteer fire fighter. He also hiked the Appalachian Trail. Known as "Blind Owl" he forged friendships everywhere he went. Unfortunately Rich was diagnosed with bone cancer and although he fought the disease with grit and determination, he succumbed to it at the age of twenty-three, on January 12, 1998.

As Rich's spirit lives on through all those who knew him, you are invited to join in this celebration in memory of Rich's life and participate in the 5K Run, 5K Fun Walk, or 800 Meter Kids Fun Run on June 28, 2014 in Hillsdale MI. Just save a burst of energy for the end of the race and KICK your way across the finish line in style!
