About This Activity
General Information: This year’s event will be known at the Got Grit? 5K Triple Play.
1. Join us for this great family event.Endurance Magazine recently selected this race as one of the best “kid-friendly races” in the Triangle. There will be a 5K race with chip-timing on a certified course. Also planned is a One Mile Fun Run/Walk and a Toddler Trot for the little runners. All participants in the one mile event receive medals. After the race visit the “best post race” refreshment table in the area. We’ll have fruit, cookies, snacks, and fantastic baked goods. After the award ceremony there will be a drawing for prizes. Child care will be provided while parents run the 5k. The race will be held, rain or shine. No refunds. Part of the profits from this event goes for grit awards, special recognitions, and mini-scholarships for Orange County students. Register by May 16 to be guaranteed a beautiful t-shirt,
2. Run for Thys: Orange High School football player Thys Oldenburg suffered a severe head injury that nearly took his life. Presently he is slowly recovering. Thys will be at the race. He may walk, run, or shoot the starting gun. A minimum of $1,000 from this race will be donated, in Thys’s name, to the Ronald McDonald House, which supported Thys and his parents during his recovery at Duke Medical Center. Also, participants can donate an added amount for Thys’s donation on the registration form or on-line. Runners will receive a souvenir race bib with Thys’s name and his football uniform number: 22.
3. 50,000 Miles for the Animal Shelter: This spring race director, Tom Carr will hit the 50,000 mile career mark in running. To celebrate this accomplishment, Tom is asking that on race day participants bring bags/cans of dog or cat food to be donated to the Orange County Animal Shelter.

Schedule of events: June 01
4:00-8:00pm: Runners can register for the race and/or pick up their packets at the entrance of the Riverwalk near the parking deck and Weaver St. Market in Hillsborough from 4.00 to 8.00pm

7:00-8:15am: On-site registration and packet pick-up in the Orange High School gym.
8:30am: One Mile Fun Run/Walk starts and finishes on the track. The course does have some gravel paths and one hill. All finishers receive a medal.
9:15am: 5k race begins on the side parking lot near the baseball stadium. The race has chip timing.
Awards for the 5k:
*The top three overall male and female finishers receive trophies.
*The first place male and female Masters (age 40+) receive a trophy.
*The first place male and female Grandmasters (age 50+) receive a trophy.
*The first place male and female Senior Grandmasters (age 60+) receive a trophy.
*The top three males/females in the following age groups receive unique awards: 9-under, 10-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-over. Note, all 5k runners (age 12-under) who do not win an age group award will receive a medal.
There will be no duplicate awards.
10:15am: The Toddler Trot (ages 5-under) will start on the football field. This race is free. No need to register. Kids receive a blue ribbon and plastic yellow ‘got grit?’ hard hat.
10:30am: Award Ceremony in the gym and drawing for prizes. Must be present to win.
5k course: The race starts at the high school, winds through quiet streets and finishes on the track. The out and back course is certified (NC13016DF).
Location: Orange High School, 500 Orange High School Road, Hillsborough, NC 27278. There is plenty of free parking.
Shirts: Participants who register by May 16th are guaranteed a beautiful race shirt. After that date, while supplies last.
