Cycle through 3 National Parks, Harpers Ferry, Antietam Battlefield, and the C&O Canal, with public history stops and interactive media along the way.  Experience the scenic beauty and history of the region up close and personal. The ride is self-paced and supported with rest stops, lunch, restrooms, and SAG support.

This ride is intended to be a relaxed and enjoyable way to spend the entire day. Group ride leaders are available for anyone anxious about riding alone or just looking for some additional support and company along the way. Proceeds to support graduate level internships in public history focused on interpretive innovation in Harpers Ferry National Park.

Event details and schedule

The ride meets at the Cavalier Heights Visitor Center Parking Lot in Harpers Ferry National Park. This is a fee free day, proceed through the entrance station and follow the signs for "Pedal Through The Past." Gate is open at 7:30 for snacks, orientation, and packet pick-up, Ride starts at 8:30. The initial 2 miles of NPS road is usually closed to bicycle traffic. Late arrivals will need to use a shuttle service (free) to transport their bike over this section of road.

The route is on some closed gravel roads, some low traffic local roads and the C&O Canal Towpath. Hybrids, Mountain Bikes, or Cyclocross Bikes are recommended. There are three rest stops along the way for snacks and hydration, including lunch at Ferry Hill on the C&O Canal. There are 4 rest room stops along the route. SAG, first aid, and technical support are available throughout the ride. There will be two vehicles and several bike mounted support riders on the course.
