About This Activity
What is Swim to the Moon? It’s an extraordinary open-water swimming adventure through the picturesque HilandVChain of Lakes near Hell, Michigan. There are four events: a half-mile swim, a 1.2-mile swim, a 5K swim, and a 10K swim. The 5K swim starts at the site of the soon-to-open North Star Reach (a camp for children with serious, chronic, or life-threatening illnesses) on the west shore of Patterson Lake. Swim south and east through the heavily forested Pinckney Recreation Area, passing through five lakes along the way. Scattered cottages are the only signs of civilization. The finish line is on the east shore of at the state beach at Halfmoon Lake. Halfmoon Lake is also where the 10K swim begins and ends, with swimmers stroking out to Patterson Lake, then back. The 0.5-mile and 1.2-mile swims start and end at Halfmoon Lake.
Charity Partner: A portion of the proceeds will go to support our charitable partner, North Star Reach, a camp for children with serious, chronic, and life-threatening health challenges. The grounds of North Star Reach serve as the starting venue for the 5K event and the turn-around point for the 10K event. You may make a donation to this great cause during the registration process, support one of our registered fundraising swimmers, or choose to fundraise for North Star Reach yourself. To learn more about North Star Reach, go to www.northstarreach.org
10K and 5K events: There are nine lakes in the Hiland Chain of Lakes. The five lakes traversed by swimmers are Patterson, Round, Island, Watson, and Halfmoon.
Other Swim to the Moon events: 1.2-mile swim — loop course in Halfmoon Lake. 0.5-mile swim — loop course in Halfmoon Lake.
Cut-off times for the 10K and 5K swim: Any swimmer who fails to reach a checkpoint by the published cut-off time will be removed from the course and transported to the finish. These are based on 50 minutes per mile or 2:50 per 100 yards.
10K swim: Swimmers must reach the halfway point at Patterson Lake by 2:00:00. 5K swim: Swimmers must reach Halfmoon Lake by 3:00:00.
The 5K and 10K have team competitions. A team is comprised of at least five individuals and no more than 10. The fastest five team members score. On a mixed team, the five scoring swimmers must include the fastest two women. See the Epic Races web site for rules. This is NOT a relay.
Please note that T-shirt sizes are not guaranteed after August 7 (two weeks prior to the event).
