About This Activity
Climb 4 cancer is a fundraising event to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. We are a approved event for DFCI. This is a hike to the top of Mt Washington on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail on September 6, 2014. Hikers can contribute by a donation and by raising additional money by obtaining sponsers for their hike.
The most common way to ascend Mt. Washington is from Pinkham Notch by the Tuckerman's Ravine trail [round trip: 8.4 miles, 4,300 feet, 6:20]. This will be the route for our Climb 4 Cancer. The first 2.4 miles, to the Hermit Lake shelters, is wide and relatively smooth going. But do not be fooled, you are going up, climbing about 1,800 feet in these 2.4 miles. The White Mountain Guide describes this section well, noting " ... its moderate but relentless climb ...". Soon the trail attacks the ravine headwall, here it becomes really steep! The last section, up the summit cone of Mt. Washington, is another steep ascent over large rocks, more "rock-hopping" than trail walking
