WHAT IS SIDS? According to the CDC, SIDS is defined as "the sudden death of an infant less than one year of age that cannot be explained after a thorough case investigation is conducted.." SIDS is the third leading cause of death in infants younger than one year, as most infant deaths occur for readily identifiable reasons. These include congenital malformations, deformities, and abnormalities. Major advances in our understanding of SIDS relationship to sleep and homeostasis, environment and genetic factors, and biochemical and molecular abnormalities have brought the occurrence of SIDS to a major decline. However, each year in the United States more than 4,500 infants die suddenly and unexpectedly.
IS SIDS PREVENTABLE? Statistics show that over 75% of SIDS babies were asleep on their bellies when they died. ALWAYS lay your baby on his/her back (supine position) when sleeping. The latest studies are concluding that pacifiers may also help protect babies from SIDS. Clinical trials are showing that sucking on a pacifier results in upper airway dilation, thus reducing airway obstruction and allowing adequate ventilation to occur. There is also evidence that identifying at risk infants through blood testing to detect the neurotransmitter serotonin may also reduce SIDS cases.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP? Seek out education! Anyone who has contact with infants should be thoroughly educated on SIDS and ways to prevent it. We plan to do loads of teaching throughout the community to help prevent SIDS deaths. Also, improved and widespread surveillance of SIDS cases should be implemented and funded. Our goal is to help spread the word that SIDS is NOT uncommon and could possibly be prevented. We want to help fund research in order to help eliminate this heartbreaking syndrome.
On behalf of Squirrel’s Momma, Daddy, & family we would like to thank you for your participation in the 2nd Annual Squirrel Run. We know God will use the tragedy that took our Squirrel for His glory. If we can prevent the death of just one baby through education, research, & prevention Squirrel’s death will not be in vain.
