*100 mile bike race is actually 88 miles
*Race courses have no drops
The course starts in a grassy alpine meadow at 8,5000ft. Over the first 3 miles the you will ride dirt doubletrack and climb to just over 9,000ft. At 9,172ft you will start to descend 9 more miles all the way to the rim on back country doubletrack, across grassy meadows and through ponderosa pines and aspens.
At the rim you will be at 7,450ft. Here you will find an interesting collection of vegetation including a mixture of pines, aspens and beavertail cactus, as the cooler air from the higher elevation meets the hot air that comes from the canyon floor below, which flows just up and over the rim before rising away from the Kaibab Plateau walls. While you ride this part of the rim for the next 18 miles on wide singletrack, you will discover where the GC 100 Alpine gets its logo as you follow the course to 5 lookout points on the rim... the 5 Fingers of Timp, North Timp, Locust, Fence Point and Parasawampitts Point. Racers will then ride 10 miles back into woods, across the "wrist" of the logo to complete "The Hand". The 58 mile racers will head straight back after the first round, climbing up to the high point, referred to as the Aspen Blow Down, before descending the last 3 miles back to the starting line. Those doing the 100 mile race will do the loop again before heading back on the doubletrack to the starting line.
What to Wear: Though most consider the Grand Canyon to have desert temperatures, the Grand Canyon Fat Tire Festival is at a high elevation. You will find yourself surrounded by greenery and a cooler climate. We suggest being prepared with by bringing warm clothing, especially for those camping out at DeMotte Campground.
Accommodations: *Camping and/or hotel accommodations are not included.
