Tour de Florence
Sun, Oct 5, 2014
About This Activity
Join us on Sunday, October 5 at 8:00 am for a 40-mile mountain bike ride in the scenic Flint Hills. Enjoy biking in the Flint Hills as fall foliage begins to peak. Bikers will also be captured by the quiet repose of the landscape highlighted by a virtual sea of grasses highlighted by the many profusions of pale blue pitcher sage wildflowers. During your journey, take note of the limestone rock Florence is known for. There are multiple quarries around the area (some now abandoned) where the limestone is harvested for gravel and large rocks for landscaping. There is a particular layer of limestone known by geologists nation wide as the “Florence” layer. Florence is also known for its unique water tower that proclaims “99.96% Pure Spring Water” (located at the intersection of US Hwy 50 & 77). This is still true today as Florence receives its water from “Crystal Springs” which are the most prolific springs in the State of Kansas. We welcome you to bring your bike, bring a friend; join us early in the morning and enjoy a relaxing mountain bike ride in the Scenic Flint Hills!
