Chappy Point to Point
Sun, Aug 30, 2020
About This Activity
A 5 mile road race commencing from Chappy Point for 2.5 miles before looping back to the start. Registration limited to 250 runners.
This year, net proceeds from the Chappy Point to Point, a Project of the Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard, will go to support two great initiatives:
CLOSE THE GAP
Half of the net proceeds from the Chappy Point to Point will go to retiring the remaining $60,025 owed by the Chappy Open Space Committee in connection with the $1 million purchase of the Cove Meadow Preserve. The Chappy Open Space Committee was established in 1998 to preserve and protect the rare and diverse landscapes which make up the unique rural island of Chappaquiddick. Its mission is (1) to maintain and add to the island’s undeveloped greenbelt and other open spaces through acquisition and conservation restrictions in conjunction with existing conservation organizations, (2) maintain and add to the island’s trail systems for walking paths, (3) preserve and enhance roadside vistas and (4) educate and involve island landowners in achieving these goals. To date, the Chappy Fund has raised more than $4 million and preserved more than 115 acres of land through direct acquisition and conservation restrictions. Until the remaining obligation is paid, however, the Committee cannot proceed with further acquisitions.
NO TIME TO WASTE
Chappaquiddick is on the front lines of climate change with more frequent and intense storms impacting our already dynamic beach systems. Food waste is a significant contributor to domestic greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane gas which has a greater impact on warming than carbon dioxide. Food waste is an opportunity for Chappaquiddickers to do something about climate change in our own homes, on our own Island and in our own lifetimes. Half of the net proceeds from the Chappy Point to Point will be provided to the Martha’s Vineyard Food Waste Initiative (FWI) to launch a pilot program to collect food waste on Chappy to be used as compost.
Race bibs can be picked up on August 29th at Memorial Wharf between 4:00 - 5:00 pm or in the Chappy parking lot from 7:00 to 8:00 am on August 30. Runners who pick up their bibs on Saturday will receive a free passenger round trip on the Chappy Ferry. Double strollers, skates, animals, scooters, and skateboards are prohibited. Single strollers are strongly discouraged. If you must run with a stroller, exercise extreme caution and start toward rear of pack.
Official Chappy Point to Point sweatshirts are available at Soft as a Grape on Dock Street in Edgartown.
