How tough is HEL’s ½ Pound?
Tough! And now we know how tough. Last year’s finish times say it all. Pablo Garcia finished first in the 2013 inaugural run at 1:39. Summer Hogge, first woman, finished at 2:01. Only 7 runners were able to finish under 2 hours. To put this in perspective, consider the Pier to Peak Half Marathon in Santa Barbara, with it’s merciless 4000 foot ascent up La Cumbra Peak. According to social media feedback and half marathon enthusiasts everywhere, this is the toughest road marathon in the country. Last year’s winning time at Pier to Peak was also 1:39. So there you have it – a half marathon with a winning time of 1:39 is tough! HEL’s Half Pound with its lung searing 16% grades and its knee pulverizing descent of Pow Mow Road could very well be the newest, toughest road marathon in the country. This year’s race will be telling. Can 1:39 be beat? Is it possible this race could ever go sub 1:30?
The ascent begins immediately, winding through pines, rocky crags and cascading creeks. Its a shame the exersion detracts so much from the beauty of the surrounding scenery. Its as breath taking as an oxygen deficit! Incidentally, this road destroys more brakes and transmissions than any other road in Utah! Yes, the infamous Pow Mow Road to Powder Mountain ski resort. If you’re a local, enough said. To describe the road as steep is a cruel understatement.
Aside from all this race hype and ‘smack, don’t be scared away from participating in this one-of-a-kind half marathon. This is a serious feather in the cap. We invite all – young and old, male and female. There is no cut off time, so take your time. We’ll keep your breakfast burrito warm! You can do this! Just finishing is winning! Are you tough enough? Bring it on!
