About This Activity
The Vision Run.
On a warm, windows open kind of day in September 2014 I was sitting at my dining room table. I was watching my girls go down the slide on the swing set and feeling a small breeze come through the screen door. It felt great and refreshing. It was just what I had needed after an IEP meeting at school (it gets very hard somedays to hear what all your beautiful, perfect child cannot do) and eye doctor appointment for Payton the day before.
I was doing a lot of research for any doctor, stem cell research left, or cure out there to help my little Payton who was born with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, Nystagmus ,and Cortical Visual Impairment. Unfortunately, there is none. There are many advances being made in stem cell research and a Doctor out in California who strictly works and studies children who have been born with ONH.I was very discouraged with my findings because of course, I wanted immediate answers. I wanted my baby to be able to see the world how her father, sister,or I see it- The beautiful flowers in the spring, the perfect color of the swimming pool before you jump in the summer, or see the first snowfall of the year.
But then I looked out the window again and saw a big smile on her face as her little sister Kendall handed her a dandelion she had picked out of the yard. Payton is content and loves her life. She knows no different. God gave me this perfect gift and I cannot dwell on the things in life that cannot be changed. Since I cannot find a cure, or help scientist study how stem cell research rebuilds the Optic Nerve, i decided to start something much simpler but still brings awareness to Vision Loss and help out as many children and adults who suffer from this.
Then we came up with the idea for a 5k and to donate all the proceeds each year to an organization that helps people who have lost vision. That leads me into the organizations of American Blind Golf. A group of phenomenal individuals, sighted and non sighted who have helped Payton and countless others with providing magnifying tools.keybords, and other device to make students and adults living with vision loss a little easier. They have been such a blessing to so many families and do everything they humanly can to make sure everyone has what they need to succeed.
Thank you so much for supporting The Vision Run and I cannot wait to see you there!
