Event details and schedule

Olympic Swim Course – 1.5 kilometers (.9 miles)

The start of the swim will be from the marina docks on the west side of E. 9th St. pier north of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. From the dock swimmers will proceed to the Start line in the water due west to the exit from the inner harbor, then turn right, heading north. Swimmers will head north toward the breakwall to the turn buoy mid way into the channel. Swimmers will return toward the entrance to the inner harbor heading south. Swimmers will proceed to a buoy at the entrance to the inner harbor, turning left. Swimmers will proceed eastbound to the docks and exit the water.  Participants will then proceed to the Transition Area on E. 9th Street.

Sprint Swim Course - .4 miles

The start will begin from the marina docks anchored on the west side of E. 9th St. pier and north of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Athletes will exit the marina docks for a deep water start. Swim course will proceed southwest toward the north side of the inner harbor toward a buoy turning left and heading south to the second buoy. At the second buoy swimmers will make a left turn and head back to the marina docks exiting the swim. Swimmers will exit on to the marina docks and then run the ramp to the Transition area on E. 9th Street.

Super Sprint Swim Course -- 300 yards

The start will begin from the marina docks anchored on the west side of E. 9th St. pier and north of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Athletes will exit the dock for a deep water start. Swim course will proceed southwest toward the middle of the inner harbor toward a buoy in the left. At 150 yards, swimmers will go around the turn buoy in a counter-clockwise-fashion and head back to the marina docks. Swimmers will exit on to the dock and then run the ramp to the Transition area on E. 9th Street.

Aid Stations

Aid Stations will be available at different points along the Run course for athletes to stay hydrated. Each Aid Station will offer both Arrowhead Spring Water and Herbalife H30. Look for aid stations at the following locations:

  • Exiting Transition on the E. 9th St Pier
  • Top of the Memorial Shoreway entrance ramp and E. 9th St.
  • On the Memorial Shoreway at the 5K turn around
  • Cleveland Triathlon Finishline behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Swim Stream Start

Here's how the SwimStream start works:
  • Participants will be allowed to self-determine they start the swim portion of the Cleveland Triathlon.  Those with the fastest anticipated swim time will be encouraged to start in the earliest grouping or stream. For the Olympic Distance, this would be below 22 minutes; for the Sprint it would be below 11 minutes.
  • The swim chute will be very similar to other swim starts you've seen.  Volunteers will be holding a sign that has a specific time on it (similar to a run pace for a half or full marathon). Swimmers should line up in their appropriate anticipated time.  Note, just like a running event, we will not force someone in a specific time/pace.  It is on the honor system. This will allow some variability if friends, members of a triathlon club, co-workers from the same company, or family members want to swim together.  We want swimmers to have maximum comfort and relaxation when entering the ocean.
  • Once a stream enters the start chute, swimmers will move toward the end of the chute, cross the timing mat and proceed directly into the water. Similar to a funnel. Your time starts when you cross the SwimStream timing mat. We will have streams of approximately 75 swimmers each (e.g., 75 swimmers in the under-22-minute Olympic swim stream).  We will run streams of swimmers until we get 300 participants in the water. At this point, athletes will be allowed into the water as earlier streams of swimmers finish and come up onto the beach. Lifeguards and our swim coordinators will assist in controlling the flow of the swimmers (like turning off and on a spigot).
  • Once the Olympic distance race is in the water, we will have a approximately 10 minute gap and then start the Sprint under-11 minute swimmers, and so on until all the competitors have left the beach. The Sprint will start once the Olympic swimmers are past the turn buoys, and the Super Sprint starts after the Sprint swimmers are past the turn buoys.
  • We strongly encourage warm-ups prior to the swim start. This will help you get acclimated to the water.
