NOTE:  On-line registration is now closed!  Register on-site between 8am-9am on Saturday, April 19th!

The Town of Clarkdale and the Verde River Valley Nature Organization are dealing up a river recreation event that gives you the chance to win $1,000 if you have the winning poker hand!  Verde River Poker Run participants will paddle on one of the most pristine 3.5 mile stretches of the Verde River, stopping along the way to collect a 5-card poker hand!  Not lucky?  Even the losing hand gets a prize!  The lowest poker hand will win a Gift Basket worth at least $250.

Proceeds of the event will enhance the Town of Clarkdale and the Verde River Valley Nature Organization's efforts to raise awareness of our natural resources by providing recreation, education and nature tourism opportunities that support the stewardship of the Verde River.  Not only that, you'll have a great day on the Verde River!!

The Verde River Poker Run is one of the 2014 RiverFest events, which includes a series of events in the Verde Valley, along the Verde River, in March/April, 2014.

Event schedule and times

8:00-9:00 am   Boat Drop Off

Participants will drop off their boats (carpooling is encouraged) at the launch site at TAPCO River Access Point (TAPCO RAP), Sycamore Canyon Road (2.25 miles north of the Tuzigoot Road intersection) between 8:00-9:00 am.  Vehicles must then be moved to the Tuzigoot River Access Point (Tuzi RAP), 15 E. Tuzigoot Road, where a shuttle will transport them back to the TAPCO RAP.  There will be no public parking at the TAPCO RAP!

8:30-9:30 am  Shuttle Services

Shuttles will run at 8:30 am; 9:00 am; and, 9:30 am.

8:00 - 9:30 am    On-Site Registration/Check-in

Registration/Check-in will occur at the TAPCO RAP from 8:00-9:30 a.m.  THIS IS NOT A RACE!  Staggered starts will begin at 9am and the last launch will take place by 10:15am.  All boaters must be off the river by 3:30 pm.

9:00 -10:15 am   Participants launch in waves (groups and timing of launches will be handled by on-site launch coordinator).

Poker cards will be collected at 4 stops along the river, and the 5th card must be collected by 4:00 pm at the Clarkdale Park, 1001 Main Street, Clarkdale.  The winning hands will be announced at the Park at 5:00 pm

1:30-5:00 pm   Post Paddle Party at the Clarkdale Park

The Post Paddle Party at the Clarkdale Park serves as your destination for your 5th card pick-up and to unwind after your time on the Verde River!  Celebrate the end of a fantastic day with a concert in the park and visits to local businesses and vendors in downtown Clarkdale.  Don't like your Poker Hand?  Purchase an extra card for $10 to increase your chance of a winning hand!  50/50 Raffle tickets will also be on sale, $1 each or 6 for $5.

Poker Hand Details:

The winning hand is determined by standard 5-card poker hand rankings … there are no wild cards!  Participants will be issued a Poker Hand Score sheet at the beginning of the event for each hand that they purchase (one hand is included with the registration, extra hands can be purchased for $35 each). They will draw one card at random from a single-deck at each location. If they draw a card that they already have in their hand, they will need to draw a new card. The organizer will mark the participant's score card with the correct card before the participant proceeds to the next stop. At the 5th and final stop at the Clarkdale Park, participants can purchase one extra card per hand to try to better their hand ($10 for an extra card).

High Card


  • Aces count high for all hands (i.e. a pair of Aces beats a pair of Kings).
  • In a straight, and Ace can count low OR high, but not both!
  • If any card drawn is a duplicate of a card previously drawn, that card must be re-drawn. No hand can have duplicate cards!

 In Case of a Tie

In case of a tie, all those with the tying hands will be dealt a new 5 card hand from a single-deck. Winner takes all!
