About This Activity
History of the Y Cup Relay in Cheshire
The Y Cup Relay is a partnership between the Cheshire Public Schools and the Cheshire Community YMCA. The purpose of the race is to get elementary school students excited about running. It also creates a friendly competition between all of the elementary schools in town promoting school pride.
The Y Cup relay originally started as a part of our Sea Dog 5K road race back in 2012. To help the schools encourage kids to prepare for their mile run test, the Y created a 3 person relay as part of our 5K. Each team member ran a 1 mile leg of the 5K course. At the time of our last race in 2017, we had over 180 kids participating. After a 2 year absence, the PE department at Cheshire Public Schools has asked us to reinstitute the relay to help them improve the annual physical fitness test scores, which have been dropping over the past few years and are below nationwide standards.
The Current Y Cup Relay
The Y is now holding the Y Cup Relay as a standalone event at Bartlem Park. Teams of 3 students will each run 1 mile around the trail of the Chapman property of Bartlem Park. The relay teams will be scored based upon their finish places to determine the winning school. There are separate team divisions for male and female teams of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. The Cheshire public schools and St Bridget School will be participating in the race.
